I'm Just Sayin - Ban Social Media for Kids?
Now this is the FCNB podcast network. Just listen to yourself presents. I'm just saying with Davis. Florida Governor rond De Santis has just signed a law banning social media for children under fourteen and restricting it for children under sixteen. Many people are saying this is an act of authoritarianism, limiting something that really should be for parents to decide. The libertarian in me agrees with these people, but the mother in me wonders if those opinions change if we look at social media as a drug rather than simply a communication space. There are plenty of studies exposing the addictive nature of social media, how it acts as a stimulant, creating addictive dopamine spikes to keep the user coming back for more. And we're all familiar with the manipulative strategies of social media companies, shaping algorithms and censoring comments in order to promote politically or media narratives, or even just sell materialism. There is more to suggest social media is a net harm to the developing minds of children than it is a help. The question of overreach lies on how you define social media. If it is simply a tool of communication, then the government has no place in creating limits around it. But if you believe social media is a powerful drug, then perhaps it is justifiable to limit its use for vulnerable people. I don't have the answer here, and I'm genuinely torn on this type of legislation, but I don't think it's as simple as declaring Governor DeSantis a dictator. These are important questions that should be asked and answered. Keep thinking about this one, parents. This is a topic that will only become more relevant as we move forward in this current era. I'm Kira Davis, and I'm just saying this has been a presentation of the FCB podcast Network, where Real Talk Lives is online at FCB Podcasts dot com. M
